Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his team can keep managing with injury setbacks after disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz is not ready for several more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

Havertz has been sidelined since the summer due to knee surgery. Initially expected to return sooner, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when advancing his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”

“Our experience helped us build a squad that is considerably steadier and has more options,” stated the manager.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This news leaves a dilemma for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. A decision is required between sticking with Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains an option post-recovery.

Fitness Doubts Remain

Additional concerns surround centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Chelsea match. Therefore, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably continue in the heart of the defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta feels the substantial investment on squad depth during the summer has resulted in a much stronger position to handle such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge

In response if increased squad depth was benefiting their title quest, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, since the current term has seen more issues in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he added.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”

Commenting on the complication noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the next level and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his personal desire to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. I mean, he is a footballer who, personally, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”

“His availability record is phenomenal, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to get him back around the team playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
